My friend Doug Beitler has been put to task to grow produce in high salted dessert of Dubai. Using microbes and biochar, he has shown success in bioremediation of salted dessert:

Hello Peter,
Good Video, and Biochar charged with humic acid or tannic acid will capture and immobilize heavy metals minizing transfer to the growing plant.
The Biochar proto-type that was destined for Fukushima now resides with Dean Julian Tyson ( UMASS-Amherst ) and it, and a few other modified Biochars are scheduled for testing  for use in Arsenic removal from groundwater.

In the video there was a statement That the salts were converted into potassium.????
